چکیده
A great deal of recent research has focused on the theory and application of computationally intensive statistical techniques such as bootstrapping kernel density estimation Gibbs samplers etc Many of these techniques are especially well suited for complex models yet are still very underutilized by scienti c researchers Our interest is in the application of such Bayesian inferential methodology to a data set taken from veterinary epidemiology Schukken et al describe counts of clinical mastitis cases taken from dairy herds over a one year period the parameter of interest is the mean number of cases Because of dependence within herds though caution must be taken in light of possible overdispersion Thus con dence intervals calculated from a Poisson model for counts assuming independence may not be of the correct precision Schukken et al attempt to correct for this by approximating a Poisson model which has an extra parameter for overdispersion but this makes the construction of interval estimates somewhat di cult We approach these data from a Bayesian point of view and introduce a hierarchical Poisson model which allows more exibility to accomodate the overdispersion Analysis of this somewhat complex model necessitates the use of a computational algorithm such as the Gibbs sampler Four estima tors of an equal tailed credible interval for the mean number of cases of clinical mastitis are considered They are an estimator found by aver aging quantities across Gibbs sampler iterations a similarly constructed weighted average estimator an order statistics estimator and an estima tor based on density estimation Additional comparisons are made with the frequentist intervals based on the Schukken et al analysis Our comparisons take into account bias precision and computing time The in tervals surprisingly di er only slightly in location and therefore o er similar conclusions about the prevalence of the disease in the study area Standard errors though are considerably di erent

Comparison of Estimates Using Record Statistics from Lomax Model: Bayesian and Non Bayesian Approaches
This paper address the problem of Bayesian estimation of the parameters, reliability and hazard function in the context of record statistics values from the two-parameter Lomax distribution. The ML and the Bayes estimates based on records are derived for the two unknown parameters and the survival time parameters, reliability and hazard functions. The Bayes estimates are obtained based on conju...
متن کاملGenetic Parameter Estimates for Lactation Curve Parameters, Milk Yield, Age at First Calving, Calving Interval and Somatic Cell Count in Holstein Cows
The objective of this study was to estimates the genetic and environmental components for the lactation curve parameters, milk yield, age at first calving (AFC), calving interval (CI) and somatic cell count (SCC) in Iranian Holstein cows. The dataset consisted of 210625 test day records from 25883 cows with milk yield in the first parity recorded from July 2002 to September 2007 in a total of 9...
متن کاملEstimation of genetic and phenotypic parameters for clinical mastitis, somatic cell production deviance, and protein yield in dairy cattle using Gibbs sampling.
When including clinical mastitis in the breeding goal, it is useful to know what measure of the trait is most appropriate and its relationship to the primary production traits and indicator traits in the relevant population. In this paper, genetic and phenotypic parameters for clinical mastitis, somatic cell production deviance, and protein yield were estimated for the dairy breed Danish Red. I...
متن کاملRelationship between season, lactation number and incidence of clinical mastitis in different stages of lactation in a Holstein dairy farm
The aim of the present study was to compare the occurrence and duration of clinical mastitis in different seasons, stages of lactation period and parities in a Holstein dairy farm in Iran. A retrospective epidemiological survey from April 2005 to March 2008 was conducted on 884 clinical mastitis cases of 7437 lactations. Data of each case including calendar-date of mastitis onset, days in milk ...
متن کاملBiofilm formation, hemolysin production and antimicrobial susceptibilities of Streptococcus agalactiae isolated from the mastitis milk of dairy cows in Shahrekord district, Iran
Streptococcus agalactiae is a major contagious pathogen causing bovine sub-clinical mastitis. The present investigation was carried out to determine some phenotypic characteristics of the S. agalactiae strains isolated from bovine mastitis cases in dairy cows of Shahrekord in the west-center of Iran. One hundred eighty California mastitis test (CMT) positive milk samples were ...
